Panel SA: Food Inflation Heats New Trend of Donations to Fight Hunger

by

Food donation initiatives by large companies, which exploded at the start of the pandemic, are likely to enter a new uptrend in an attempt to mitigate the effects of food inflation.

Paula Fabiani, director of Idis (Institute for the Development of Social Investment), says that the main cause for Brazilians today is the fight against poverty. “In 2015, it was health and children. In 2020, the fight against poverty emerged as the main cause and far removed from the second and third place. I think this is also reflected in the performance of companies that are looking at these most basic needs of Brazilians” , says Fabiani.

According to her, many of the companies that acted in the pandemic donations are also seeking alignment with the business, such as health and education companies taking initiatives in their own areas.

Attorney Priscila Pasqualin, a partner at the PLKC office and a specialist in philanthropic funds, says that she has received at the office companies interested in helping with issues related to the fight against poverty and hunger. “In the ESG wave, the S is the least developed in the world, but companies are seeing private social investment, the line of social responsibility done in a strategic way, and organizing themselves”.

Last week, Vale announced its renewed support for Citizenship Action in the Natal Sem Fome campaign, encouraging financial donations to the project. The mining company says it will donate R$10 for every R$1 donated by its volunteer network until reaching R$70,000 in volunteer donations. According to the company, the initiative is in addition to the delivery of 1 million food baskets by December to 219,000 families who experience serious food insecurity.

The wave of donations that the country experienced after the start of the pandemic, in March 2020, grew strongly until the middle of the second half of last year, when it reached the mark of BRL 6.5 billion, according to the ABCR monitor , fundraising association that followed the evolution of the numbers. This year, it grew a little more until it parked at R$7.1 billion.
