According to the data of the Institute of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), in October there were 2 million arrivals recording an increase of 11.0% compared to October 2022 and 24.5% compared to October 2019.
Tourists “voted” for Greece in October as well, registering an all-time record since 2019 and from 2022 in arrivals and collections.
According to the data of the Institute of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (INSETE), in October there were 2 million arrivals recording an increase of 11.0% compared to October 2022 and 24.5% compared to October 2019.
In the period January-October 2023, 23.0 million international air arrivals were recorded, surpassing the levels of January-October 2022, showing an increase of 11.5%/2.4 million arrivals. Compared to the January-October 2019 period, the increase is estimated at 12%.
In the period January-October 2023, 6.3 million international air arrivals were recorded at Athens International Airport, showing an increase of +1.4 million/+28.4%. It was followed by Thessaloniki airport, where 2.1 million international air arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of +355 thousand/+20.3%.
At Heraklion airport an increase of +160 thousand/+4.7% was recorded while international air arrivals reached 3.6 million and at Chania airport arrivals reached 1.4 million showing an increase of +111 thousand/+ 8.6%.
Rhodes airport recorded 2.6 million international air arrivals showing an increase of +74 thousand/+2.9%, Kos airport recorded 1.3 million international arrivals showing an increase of +66 thousand/+5.3% while at Karpathos airport 90 thousand international arrivals were recorded, also showing an increase of +2 thousand/+2.7%.
At Mykonos airport, 546 thousand international air arrivals were recorded, showing a decrease of -30 thousand/-5.2% and at the airport
of Santorini, 743 thousand international arrivals were recorded, showing a decrease of -70 thousand/-8.6%.
At Corfu airport international air arrivals were 1.8 million showing an increase of +142 thousand/+8.4% and at Zakynthos airport international air arrivals were 991 thousand showing an increase of +89 thousand/+9 .8%. 393,000 international air arrivals were recorded at Aktion airport, showing an increase of +21,000/+5.6%, while at Kefalonia airport, the increase amounted to +10,000/+2,8% as 363,000 international air arrivals were recorded .
An increase of +18 thousand/+8.2% was recorded at Skiathos airport with air arrivals amounting to 239 thousand. A similar picture at the airports of Samos and Kavala with the increase amounting to +7 thousand/+5.9% and +22 thousand/+21.9% respectively as 132 thousand and 122 thousand international air arrivals were recorded .
At the airport of Kalamata there was a decrease of -25 thousand/-15.5% while 134 thousand international air arrivals were recorded. In contrast, at Araxos airport, international air arrivals reached 67 thousand, showing an increase of +18 thousand/+36.3%. Finally, at Mytilini airport, international air arrivals reached 54 thousand showing an increase of +7 thousand/+15.6%
Road tourism
In October, 544 thousand arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of 11 thousand/ 2.0% compared to last year and a decrease of 38.5% compared to 2019.
In the period January-October 2023, 9.5 million international road arrivals were recorded, compared to 7.2 million in the period January-October 2022, showing an increase of 33.1%/2.4 million road arrivals and a decrease of 14.4% compared to 2019.
In the period January-October 2023, an increase was recorded from all neighboring countries compared to the corresponding period of 2022.
In particular, the biggest increase both in absolute differences and in percentage differences was recorded by Bulgaria by 1.5 million/57.1% while 4.2 million road arrivals were recorded and followed by Turkey where an increase was recorded by 339 thousand/ 50.8% with 1.0 million road arrivals.
The increase from North Macedonia amounted to 324 thousand/12.8% as road arrivals were 2.9 million, while from Albania the increase amounted to +190 thousand/+14.7% with road arrivals forming to 1.5 million.
Travel Receipts
Travel receipts showed an increase of 15.2% in the period January-September 2023 compared to the corresponding period of 2022 and amounted to 17,919 million euros. Compared to the same period in 2019, an increase of 11.3% is recorded
This development is due to the increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries by 11.7%, which amounted to 9,982 million euros, as well as receipts from residents of countries outside the EU-27 by 18.3%, which amounted to 7,459 million euros.
In more detail, receipts from residents of the euro zone countries amounted to 7,989 million euros, increased by 12.0%, while receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the euro zone showed an increase of 10.5% and amounted to 1,992 million euros.
In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 4.4% and amounted to 2,965.7 million euros, while receipts from France increased by 10.6% and amounted to 1,291 million euros.
From the countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom showed an increase of 6.8%, which amounted to 3,015 million euros. Receipts from the USA increased by 13.5% to EUR 1,116 million, while those from Russia decreased by 23.8% to EUR 28.0 million.
Greek hotels are “champions”.
In October 2023, Greece ranks first in the general satisfaction index (GRI) of hotels with 86%.
In second place is Cyprus with 85% and in third place Italy and Spain with 84% respectively.
It is followed by Turkey with 83% while in the last place was France with 78%.
