The US government has prepared an initial sanctions package against Russia, which includes a ban on transactions by major Russian banks in US financial institutions, Reuters reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the same sources, the measures, which will be implemented only if Russia invades Ukraine, are aimed at harming the Russian economy, cutting off banking relations between Russian banks and US banks that make international trade possible.
The final list of banks subject to sanctions has not yet been formed, but sources estimate that VTB, Sberbank, VEB.RF and Gazprombank are likely to be included in it.
In addition, the United States will impose sanctions on Russian individuals and entities, including the seizure of assets and prohibition of any transaction.
The White House and the US Treasury Department declined to comment on the report.
Western countries believe that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a matter of time. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov spoke of “empty and unfounded” speculation escalating tensions.
