Piraeus Bank expresses its sadness at the death of Giorgos Provopoulos in a statement.

“It is with sadness that we bid farewell to Giorgos Provopoulos, the academic, banker and former Governor of the Bank of Greece.

Giorgos Provopoulos honored all the positions and offices he assumed with scientific excellence, institutional competence, economic and political insight, efficiency and bravery. Among the stops on this journey, was his important collaboration with Piraeus as Vice President of the Board of Directors and CEO.

From the position of central bank governor and board member of the European Central Bank, he contributed to the creation of the conditions that allowed the country to manage the severe consequences of the financial crisis of the early 2010s, an integral part of which were the bold decisions for the restructuring of the Greek banking system which was able to be effectively restructured and now essentially supports the country’s development path.

We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
