Panel SA: Potential of the gambling market in Brazil is still uncertain

by

It is still uncertain the size of the market potential that Brazil will have if it advances in the approval of the gambling law, releasing animal games, bingo and casino.

For Magno José Sousa, president of the IJL (Instituto Jogo Legal), which defends the opening of the market, there is room for about 600 bingos, 7 large casinos and 12 smaller ones.

Under the rules of the gambling bill passed by the House last week, there would be conditions for more: 33 casinos and 1,420 licensed bingos, established according to the population of each state or municipality. These numbers may rise due to the release of ships with structure for games and installation in hotels.

“What the law defines is a parameter based on the population, but the number will actually depend on the characteristics of the market and whether there will be interest in investing. Not every city with a minimum population can hold bingo. , regulate and debug it”, says Sousa.

In the case of the animal game, he estimates that the number should be closer to the one predicted in the project, close to 300.

In Sousa’s opinion, legalization will be able to prevent money laundering with mechanisms to control the use of banknotes and identify all gamblers with a record of prizes above R$10,000. He advocates the expansion of slot machines in the project.

“These machines will not disappear overnight. If they are not released in small establishments, they may end up migrating to criminal structures, militias and criminal organizations”, he says.

The text will still be analyzed by the Senate and to become law depends on the sanction of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
