Riachuelo entered into a partnership with the IPT (Institute for Technological Research) to develop the so-called closed circuit circularity on a large scale, which makes it possible to transform textile waste into a new yarn to make new pieces.
The company says that the investment, which involves around R$ 2 million and two years of research, provides for studies in the physical and chemical ways to develop the new yarn, which will be used in the brand’s products.
The measure would reduce disposal and dependence on virgin raw materials, prioritizing waste from factories and clothing donated by customers in stores.
The idea, according to Riachuelo, is to give the new destination to about 4 thousand tons of textile materials per year.
The company has a recycling program that sends around 60% of the items collected for sale in bazaars of its program with the Solidarity League, 20% are donated to needy populations and the rest is recycled, but outside the clothing sector.
