Google expressed its disappointment in a statement about today’s (10.9.2024) decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union (EU) to fine it 2.4 billion euros for abusing its dominant position in the market by favoring its own price comparison service .

Specifically, Google in its announcement states:

“We are disappointed by the Court’s decision. The decision relates to a number of very specific facts. Already in 2017 we made changes in order to comply with the European Commission’s decision. Our approach has been working successfully for more than seven years, generating billions of clicks for over 800 comparison shopping services.”

It is recalled that the fine was imposed based on the European Commission’s anti-monopoly legislation, which expired in 2017.

The Commission had then concluded that Google favors its own price comparison service over its rivals.

Google appealed the decision to the General Court, the EU’s second highest court, which also upheld the fine.

Google then took the case to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the EU’s highest court.

Today the European Court of Justice rejected the appeal and upheld the Commission’s fine.
