The initiative METRON Sustainable Tourism presented by the Administration of SETE. It is an initiative for self-regulation and the transition of tourism businesses to sustainability, with a view to socially and environmentally sustainable development.
Its name comes from the word μετρον, which means measurement, proportion, but also rule.
The purpose of SETE is to create a integrated program of self-commitment, self-control, self-targeting, self-improvement and business verificationoffering them the framework and resources for their gradual, smooth and continuous transformation. The initiative will have an annual nature, so that businesses keep up with both the current legislation and the demands of society. At the same time, they will achieve sustainable growth by enhancing reputation and trust from stakeholders.
In collaboration with INSET and Marketing Greecebut also the assistance of specialized consultants in business sustainability programs, SETE formulated both the methodology and the necessary tools, targeting businesses in the wider tourism sector.
Among other things, businesses will be able to benefit from the digital business self-assessment platform, the Advisory Board (Think Tank) that will determine the strategy and the Steering Committee that will methodize the technical tools. At the same time, they will have access to the Webinars, the Toolkit of studies and good practices and the Promotion and Promotion Activities implemented in collaboration with INSETE and Marketing Greece. In addition, strategically selected Ambassadors will communicate targeted messages about sustainable business development.
At this stage, the digital platform is in pilot mode, with the first 50 companies invited to take part in the process.
The evaluation of businesses through the platform will be based on the following 5 indicators:
- Energy Consumption
- Water Consumption
- Waste generation and management
- Labor matters
- Social issues
In the first phase, the initiative will address 5 tourism sectors, namely: accommodation, air transport, sea transport, land transport and tourist offices.
The President of SETE, Giannis Paraschissaid: “Tourism is and must remain a pioneer and committed ally in the adoption of sustainable policies, recognizing its responsibility and its decisive role. Our strategy is based on tourism development with respect, with moderation, with rules. We are starting this effort based on the principle of “self-regulation” with the participation of 50 companies from five sectors of the tourism sector, launching our pilot program. We anticipate that this initiative will be a springboard for the participation of the entire sector, promoting a sustainable and competitive tourism future.”
The Vice President of SETE, Love Sbokouemphasized, among other things: “SETE is visionary, with seriousness towards the future of the area, and responsibility towards society, today it takes the thread and provides with the METRON initiative the supplies and the framework, i.e. the way, so that the tourism sector overall, structured and coordinated, but also for each company separately, to plan the path that suits it towards sustainability”.
The Authorized Advisor of SETE, Alexander Thanosabout the digital platform he pointed out: “It is not a static recording system, but a dynamic scheme that evaluates, targets, verifies, forms and constantly evolves, according to the dynamics set by the conditions of sustainable business operation”.
