EU wants 2/3 reduction in Russian gas imports this year and possible price ceiling

by

Announces plans to end European dependence on Russian energy Tuesday the European Union.

The EU will reportedly reduce its imports of Russian gas by 2/3 this year and will eliminate its overall need for Russian oil and gas “Long before 2030”.

The EU says it plans to eliminate its dependence on Russian gas “by diversifying its gas supplies through higher LNG (liquefied natural gas) imports and pipelines from non-Russian suppliers and higher volumes of biomass and biomass methane production and imports.” and, by reducing the use of fossil fuels faster in homes, buildings, industry and the electrical system, enhancing energy efficiency, increasing renewable energy sources and electricity, and tackling infrastructure bottlenecks. ”

The European Union depends on Russia for about 40% of its natural gas. Russia also supplies about 27% of the EU’s annual oil.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Monday that Russia could cut off gas supplies to Germany via the NordStream 1 pipeline in retaliation for Berlin’s decision to block the NordStream 2 pipeline.

The EU has also announced a series of measures to tackle the energy price spike facing the bloc for several months, which have been escalated by supply disruption concerns, including possible temporary ceilings prices and short-term state aid to companies affected by high energy prices.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen “We need to be independent of Russian oil, coal and gas,” he said. We just can not rely on a supplier who clearly threatens us. “We must act now to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices, diversify our gas supply for next winter and speed up the transition to clean energy.”

EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson emphasized that the EU had “sufficient supplies” of gas for the remaining weeks of this winter, but that “we need to replenish our reserves urgently for next year”. Therefore, the Commission will propose that by 1 October, gas storage in the EU be paid by at least 90%, he added.
