Contract for construction of the waste management infrastructure of Andros was signed between the contracting company, ILEKTOR SA, the Region of South Aegean as “Implementation Agency” and FODSA South Aegean SA as “Project Owner”.

According to a related announcement, the project, the full title of which is “Construction of a pre-treatment unit for residual mixed municipal waste and composting of a pre-selected organic fraction and Andros waste landfill”, has a total budget of 10.56 million euros.

As mentioned in this regard by Nikos StathakisCEO of ELEKTOR: “The project is an important step towards achieving the goal of transitioning to a circular economy and a resource efficient economy of the island. The contract concerns the construction and operation of 2 facilities, within an area of ​​90.17 acres, in the location “Plouska” of the municipal unit of Hydrousa of the Municipality of Andros.

More specifically, the first installation will concern a processing unit for the remaining mixed municipal solid waste (MSW), after sorting at the source, with a capacity of 2,388 tn/year, as well as biological treatment of its organic fraction. The plant will accept an additional 445 tn/year of pre-selected organic waste for biological treatment with aerobic composting. The result of the treatment will be the production of high-quality compost from the pre-selected organic waste, which can be used as a soil conditioner, and type A compost material from the mixtures, which can be used mainly as a coating and restoration material. Ferrous metals and other recyclable materials will be recovered from the remaining mixtures, while solid residues for burial will also result.

The second facility will be the sanitary waste landfill (LANDFILL), with a capacity of at least 101,000 m3 and a lifespan of at least 25 years for the needs of the final disposal of the waste of the Municipality of Andros. The unit will include the sealing works of the burial site, the flood protection projects, leachate collection and treatment projects, biogas management projects, infrastructure projects (entrance gate, bridge deck, etc.), the water supply, irrigation and firefighting network, the liquid waste treatment unit, etc.

As part of the project, road access projects are also included, concerning:

  • Asphalting of a section of the access road approximately 1.77km long,
  • Improvement of the existing road approximately 1.91km long and
  • New road alignment approximately 0.33km long.

In addition, within the stadium, space is planned for the future expansion of the landfill with an area of ​​about 6 acres and a capacity of at least 50,000m3.

The duration of the contract is 7.25 years and concerns the construction of the project and the supply of the mobile equipment which is expected to be completed in 12 months from the day of signing the contract, a three-month trial operation and then a 6-year normal operation of the projects.
