by

Prices of food and feed raw materials could rise by between 8% and 20% as a result of the conflict in Ukraine, causing a jump in the number of malnourished people worldwide, said FAO, the UN food and agriculture agency. , this Friday (11).

In a preliminary assessment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, FAO said it was unclear whether Ukraine would be able to harvest crops during a protracted conflict, and that there were also uncertainties surrounding Russian food exports.

FAO said Russia is the world’s biggest wheat exporter, while Ukraine was the fifth biggest. Together they supply 19% of the world’s supply of barley, 14% of wheat and 4% of corn, representing more than a third of global cereal exports.
