At the beginning of December, the government will announce the interventions to minimize the effects on consumers from the crisis in the electricity market in SE Europe, said this evening the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis after a meeting with representatives of the European Commission on the type of interventions that will be applied.

At the beginning of December, the price data (wholesale and mainly consumer prices) will be known in order for the government to take its decisions on the scope of the intervention.

Mr. Skylakakis added that from the Commission’s side more budgetary tools and less regulatory ones are preferred.

In detail, the Minister of Environment and Energy stated:

We had an interesting and very productive meeting with the Commission’s technical team on the phenomena of very high prices in the electricity market in South East Europe. What emerges effortlessly is that Greece has done what it needs to do on its part to contribute to the national and European market. At the moment we produce a lot of energy, we export a lot of energy, we have the interconnections and we also have a lot of flexibility in the energy produced. This positive attitude of the country is understood by the Commission. We are discussing with the Commission the commitment of the government, which is not to let consumers pass on these increases. We are discussing the tools with which we will achieve this goal, tools that on the part of the Commission there is a tendency to be more fiscal and less regulatory in relation to the functioning of the market. What consumers need to know is that the government in early December will announce the interventions that concern them and will be able to minimize the consequences of this crisis in SE Europe».
