It will be the first time that the two countries will sign a bilateral energy intergovernmental agreement. Energy security is a priority for Israel.
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen is visiting Athens today, with the aim of signing an interstate agreement between Greece and Israel in the energy sector.
In the relevant signing of the agreement together with his Greek counterpart Theodoros Skylakakis, the project of the electrical interconnection Greece – Cyprus – Israel (Great Sea Interconnector) and in particular the Cyprus – Israel section is expected to have a special place.
Energy security is a priority for Israel. The content of the agreement to be signed is expected to include cooperation in the energy sector, from Renewable Energy Sources and storage to hydrogen and electricity interconnections.
It is noted that it will be the first time that the two countries will sign a bilateral energy interstate agreement and as noted by Kathimerini, this is evaluated by diplomatic analysts as a symbolic sign of strengthening the alliance.
It is recalled that the project of the electric interconnection of Crete – Cyprus had overcome the problems that had arisen after the interstate agreement Greece – Cyprus in September.
After all, that in mid-September, Eli Cohen had telephone communication with his Cypriot counterpart on the issue of the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electrical interconnection.
During the conversation, Mr. Cohen had expressed Israel’s support for the creation of the pipeline, as he said in a post on X.
“I spoke with the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry of Cyprus, Mr. George Papanastasiou.
We underlined the strong relationship and ongoing cooperation between Israel and Cyprus and I emphasized the great importance of the Great Sea Interconnector project for Israel. The project will connect Israel’s electricity grid to the European grid via Cyprus and Greece and will strengthen energy security in the region.
This ground-breaking project is a top priority for Israel as it strengthens regional energy security, provides access to various energy markets and enhances Israel’s integration into the European energy network.”
