Book sales on Putin’s millionaire friends soar in UK

by

A book about President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, written by a British journalist, tops the UK bestseller list, its publisher said on Wednesday, after the author was sued by the Chelsea owner. , Roman Abramovich.

Catherine Belton’s “Putin’s People”, first published in 2020, “is the UK’s best-selling non-fiction book,” William Collins Books editorial director Arabella Pike said in a note.

The critically acclaimed book faced a series of lawsuits from Russian tycoons, including Abramovich, three of whom were subject to UK sanctions.

“I wish the circumstances were different. But I’m so grateful for all the attention ‘Putin’s People’ is getting,” Belton wrote on Twitter, thanking publisher Harper Collins for keeping the book on sale despite the lawsuits.

The publisher reached an out-of-court settlement in December last year with lead plaintiff Abramovich.

The book was a Sunday Times bestseller when it was released and sales soared again with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich, who bought Chelsea in 2003, was sanctioned by the UK on March 10, with an asset freeze, a travel ban and a ban on transactions with British people and companies.

The European Union on Monday adopted new sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, which diplomats say include Abramovich.
