UNDERSTAND HOW THE FGTS WORKS
The Severance Indemnity Fund is a kind of “compulsory savings” for workers, which aims to protect professionals who work with a formal contract. The employer must deposit, by the 7th of each month, 8% of the professional’s salary in an account in his name.
Upon dismissal, the worker can withdraw the values. If it is without just cause at the behest of the employer, there is still the payment of a 40% fine on the balance of the fund. If you resign, there is no way to withdraw, but there are other situations in which it is possible to withdraw the values, such as retirement and purchase of your own home, for example.
In the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020, the government released the emergency withdrawal of the FGTS. The possibility to withdraw funds from the fund, of up to one minimum wage at the time (R$ 1,045), ended at the end of that year. In all, 31.7 million workers withdrew R$ 24.2 billion.
