China filed a new appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Wednesday, having previously described US duties as “reckless” and harmful to the stability of world trade.

“The situation has escalated dangerously … as one of the affected members, China is deeply concerned and strongly opposed to this reckless action,” China said in a statement to the WTO, according to Reuters.

The US president escalated the trade war, imposing duties on dozens of countries that came into force on Wednesday, while Chinese products reach 104%.

Trump argues that duties are necessary to terminate US trade deficits with many of its commercial partners.

China responded by increasing its duties on US imports from 34%to 84%, while the European Union will start imposing first countermeasures next week, imposing 25%duties.

“Although China is opposed to the trade wars, it will determine its legitimate interests with determination,” he said in a statement he has addressed to WTO members during a meeting of goods.

China has accused Washington of violating WTO rules and undermine the polymer system, calling on the organization’s secretariat to study the impact of duties on global trade and present its findings to members.

“Recent duties are not – and will never be – a solution to commercial imbalances. On the contrary, they will return boomerang and hit the US themselves, “China said in a statement.

Selloff in the world markets has accelerated after the announcement of the new China duties round, with future employment contracts for the US brokerage index fell.

US Finance Minister Scott Bessed described China’s step as “unfortunate” and a “lost case” for Beijing.

“It is unfortunate that the Chinese do not want to negotiate, as they are the largest offenders in the international trade system,” he told Fox Business Network.

Trump’s sweeping duties have shaken the global commercial order of things that have been in place for decades, exacerbating fears of recession and causing trillion losses in the market value of large businesses.

WTO official told Reuters that China’s new appeal is an addition to Beijing’s previous request for consultations with the US deposited on April 4.

Bilateral consultations are the first stage of the official dispute resolution process. If there is no solution within 60 days, China may seek arbitration from the WTO -based WTO’s dispute resolution.
