A significantly increased compared to last year was domestic gas consumption in the first quarter of 2025, according to DESFA data.

In particular, during the period January-March 2025, total gas demand increased by 35.07%, reaching 22.30 times (TWH), from 16.51 TWH in the corresponding period last year. Following the increase of 30.03% recorded on a yearly basis in 2024, domestic demand for natural gas is significantly reinforced in the first quarter of 2025 with an increase of 28.61% compared to the same period last year, reaching 20.86 TWH. This development reflects the decisive contribution of natural gas to meet the increasing energy demand in the country at the time. It is recalled that on 24 February 2025 there was a historical high record for gas demand in Greece since the arrival of the fuel in the country, with 357 GWh. A rapid rise is also recorded in gas exports (+396.55%), which at this time reached 1.44 TWH from 0.29 TWh in the first quarter of 2024.

As DESFA mentions:

In terms of natural gas consumers, power generators continue to represent the highest consumption, covering 64% of domestic demand. Compared to the previous year, demand from power generators increased by 48.11%, reaching 13.33 TWH from 9.00 twh. On the contrary, a decrease of 14.80%, compared to the first quarter of 2024, was recorded in the consumption of natural gas by industries and CNG vehicle refueling stations directly connected to EFA, reaching 2.13 TWH, a quantity corresponding to almost 10% of domestic demand. Finally, consumption by distribution networks in the first quarter of 2025 moved to 5.40 TWH, increased by 14.41% compared to last year, covering 26% of total demand.

LNG played a leading role in gas imports, with the Revithousa terminal (Agia Triada entrance point) returning as the country’s main gateway to the country’s natural gas entrance, enhancing the diversification of supply sources, covering about 44.5% of total imports. Specifically, in the period January-March 2025, 20 tankers were unloaded at the station with a total of about 10.65 TWH compared to 9 tankers and about 6.93 TWH in the same period last year. Most of these quantities LNG came from the US, which almost doubled their imports in the country, reaching 8.65 TWH, compared to 4.54 TWH in the same period last year. Imports from Nigeria (1.12 TWH) were second place, followed by Norway (0.93 TWH). The strategic role of Revithousa was recently confirmed by the auctions for the LNG cargo -loading slots, where almost all slots were committed by 2030.

As for the contribution of the other entry points, Sidirokastro was the second gateway gateway to the country, covering about 38.8% of imports (8.66 TWH), with a 19.45% increase over the first quarter of 2024. The entry point of the new meson, through which the Tap is delivered through the Tap. 12.05% of imports (2.69 TWH), while the remaining 4.6% were entered through the Amphitrite entrance point (FSRU Alexandroupolis). Finally, dynamic growth records DESFA’s LNG Truck Loading service in Revithousa, with 144 LNG trucks loaded in the first quarter of the year, distributing about 43.5 GWh, compared to 39 LNG trucks last year. This 270% increase confirms that the service offers an effective and flexible solution to meet the energy needs of remote distribution networks and industrial consumers in both Greece and the wider region.
