Panel SA: Vale releases new figures for compensation for tragedy in Brumadinho

by

Vale publishes a new survey on the compensation paid so far to those who suffered the impacts of the tragedy that left 270 dead due to the rupture of the B1 dam, in Brumadinho (MG), in 2019.

According to the mining company, there was an agreement with about 13,000 people impacted by the rupture of the structure and the removals that the company had to make due to the increase in the emergency level.

Added together, these agreements are now in the region of BRL 3 billion, compared to BRL 2 billion paid until June last year, according to data from Vale.

The company also says that, among the family members of workers who died in the mud avalanche, more than 1,700 people signed compensation agreements.

“All employees, own or outsourced, killed in the breakup of B1, have already had at least one family member with a signed agreement”, says the company.

The payment of compensation has been an issue discussed since the tragedy, with attempts by Vale to appeal in part of the cases.

Last year, the mining company’s defense came to classify as “absurd” the payment of R$ 1 million in moral damages for a worker killed in the tragedy after a court decision.

On that occasion, international entities linked to the defense of human and workers’ rights sent letters to Vale asking the company to recognize and pay without resistance.
