Tourists spent € 4.35 billion spent in the first five months of the year, increased by 12.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2024. According to the Bank of Greece, this development is due to both the increase in revenue from EU-27 residents by 10.9%, which was stood at € 233%, which was stood at € 2.33 billion, as well as the revenue of € 23. Finally, the receipts from Russia rose to € 7.9 million.

As far as May, travel revenue increased 17.7% to € 2.25 billion. Revenue from residents of EU-27 countries rose 25.8%, which stood at € 1.32 billion, as well as the receipts from residents of other countries, which increased by 6.7% (May 2025: 800.0 million euros, May 2024: 749.4 million euros). The reinforcement of receipts by residents of the EU-27 countries was the result of the rise of both the residents of the euro area residents by 15.1% (May 2025: EUR 1,036 billion, May 2024: 900.0 million) and the receipts by residents of the EU-27 countries outside the EUR 88.6%, 289.2 million euros.

Regarding the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro zone, receipts from Germany increased by 16.1% and stood at € 473.5 million, as well as 9.9% receipts from France, which stood at EUR 153.3 million. 14.0% increased by Italy, which stood at € 62.6 million. From the other countries, the United Kingdom revenue increased by 8.9%, which stood at € 314.1 million, while US revenue decreased by 28.0% and stood at € 112.5 million. Finally, the receipts from Russia rose to € 5.2 million.

Travel traffic

Concerning tourist traffic in the five months of January-May 2025, it increased by 2.1%and stood at 7.09 million travelers, compared to 6 ,94 million travelers in the corresponding period of 2024. In particular, travel traffic via airports rose by 6.0%, while it was 9.2%. During the review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries stood at 3.81 million travelers, down 5.1% compared to the corresponding period of 2024, while travel traffic from other countries increased by 12.0% and stood at 3.28 million travelers. Travel traffic from euro area countries fell 0.5%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro zone decreased by 19.3%.
In particular, travel from Germany increased by 1.5% and stood at 1.08 million travelers, while France decreased by 27.1% and stood at 342.2 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy, which was 311.9 thousand travelers, also declined by 11.7%. With regard to countries outside the EU 27, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 6.7% and stood at 710.8 thousand travelers, while the US increased by 18.1% to 463.4 thousand travelers. Finally, travel from Russia increased to 7.5 thousand travelers.

In May alone, the incoming travel traffic stood at 2.97 million travelers, down 2.7% compared to the corresponding month of 2024. In particular, airport travel increased by 1.0% compared to May 2024, while it was reduced by 21.5% by road stations. The fall of incoming travel movement came mainly from the recession of travel from EU countries by 27%by 4.8%, as travel traffic from other countries increased by 0.8%. More specifically, travel traffic from euro area countries stood at 1.41 million travelers, down 4.5%, while traveling by EU-27 countries outside the euro zone, which stood at 365.3 mm travelers.
In particular, travel from Germany decreased by 0.1% and stood at 604.7 thousand travelers, while France fell 30.8% to 177.6 thousand travelers. Travel traffic from Italy, which was 113.6 thousand travelers, also declined by 12.9%. With regard to countries outside the EU-27, travel from the United Kingdom decreased by 9.1% and stood at 416.2 thousand travelers, while the US fell 0.9% to 123.9 thousand travelers. Finally, travel from Russia increased to 4.7 thousand travelers.

Travel balance

For the first five months of the year, the travel balance showed a surplus of € 3.01 billion, compared to a surplus of EUR 2.76 billion in the corresponding period of 2024. Increase by EUR 491.9 million or 12.7%, travel revenues, which stood at € 4,352.2 million or € 22 million or € 22 million. It was also observed in travel payments, which stood at € 1,345.3 million.
