The major problem of water scarcity is mentioned by the Deputy Prime Minister, Kostis Hatzidakis, with a post on LinkedIn.

The text of the Vice President of the Government is as follows:

“Water is privatized! We will say water water! “. Already before we even present national designs for waters, conspiracy theories and fake news began. Let us be clear: water is and remains a public good, as defined by the Constitution. And we do the national plan for the water, just so that we do not say water. Additional and even more adventurous initiatives.

Whether one agrees or disagree with the government, it cannot be disputed that the climate crisis is here and affects the entire Mediterranean with particular severity. Especially our country is 19th in the world in the risk of water scarcity. We did not remember the issue of water management now. Since 2019, more than 200 related projects have been implemented, with more than 1,000 in progress. However, the deterioration, due to the climate crisis, as it appears from all official data, requires us to adapt to the new data and to consider “outside the box” solutions.

Is there anyone who believes that such a big social and national issue can be addressed by 739 different bodies? When many of these bodies are particularly problematic in all respects? Let’s not forget that the whole of Greece was powered by a single company! So there must also be a more central management of the necessary projects.

We also need to use the new technologies, see, for example, the example of Cyprus and Israel with desalination. And apply advanced techniques to reuse water for irrigation. While we must also take a number of more urgent measures for the coming months. Through all these initiatives, our goal is to ensure the continuous supply of water for both cities and villages and our farmers. And of course at affordable prices and with special care for the most vulnerable.

When we present our individual actions, we will obviously discuss them with all the parties involved. But we all have to have a serious debate that responds to the extent of the problem. The discussion is not limited to the deconstruction of various fake news.

The national plan for waters will be a great reform. We do our debt to the younger generation and future generations, which are entitled to have a truly quality future! ”, Mr Hatzidakis said.
