The US has sent the proposed text of a joint statement that is guaranteing the outline of the trade agreement with the European Union, the Commission said Thursday, indicating that the political agreement is increasingly approaching its implementation.

“I am pleased to confirm that we have received a text from the US with their proposals to complete the document, so we will look at it now,” a spokesman for the Olof Gill trade told a press conference according to Politico.

It is recalled that US President Donald Trump has reached an agreement with Commission President Ursula von der Laien in his golf club in Scotland on July 27. Since then, it has established a 15%basic duty, but other aspects of the agreement have not yet come into force.

Specifically, the US has not yet reduced cars from 27.5% to 15%, as announced. In addition, steel and aluminum are still subject to 50%duties.

“We will have some cooperation both technical and political with our American counterparts and continue to move forward in that. I have to reiterate that we are fully focused and dedicated to completing the joint statement and having it ready to read it all as soon as possible, “Gill noted. “We will talk over and over again until we come to a final text and hope to do so soon,” he added, refusing to give a specific timetable.

It is noted that the joint statement is expected to be a political proclamation of a few pages that will set a roadmap for further trade negotiations and not a complete, binding trade agreement, Politico stresses.

Duties on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors remain at zero for the time being. However, the US has begun research to determine whether these areas must be charged new duties. According to an EU report describing the agreement, these duties will not exceed 15%.
