US President Donald Trump boasts that the global tariff charges he has imposed bring about “much more money than the country has ever seen”, which, he says, could help reduce debt and even pay tax checks.

What Trump no longer mentions is the new service that once envisioned that it would be crucial to the implementation of these policies: an “external revenue service” or otherwise ERS, Politico notes.

The US president has announced plans to create ERS in a social media post shortly before his swearing -in, which, he said, will be responsible for the collection of “duties, fees and all revenue from foreign sources”. Trump only claimed on Thursday that his duties would generate “trillions of dollars”, while government officials have said they could someday replace US income tax as a major source of revenue for the federal government.

However, more than six months later, the new service remains simply a plan, which has been delayed due to conflicting views on its mission and the fact that duties have not reached the levels provided by the president, according to three sources near the White House.

The neglect of ERS, which was intended to function as the main channel for the collection and management of customs revenue, doubts whether the government is still planning to turn this revenue into tax refunds, industrial projects or other tangible benefits.
