Confidence, security and speed remain the decisive criteria for Greek consumers in online markets, according to the Nexi Ecommerce Report 2024 survey. Electronic payments have been consolidated as a key part of the purchasing experience, with cards and digital platforms dominating the options.

How do Greeks pay on the internet

Debit card is the most commonly used payment method with 57% of users stating that they have used it in the last 28 days.

Following is PayPal with 49%, which still concentrates a high preference thanks to its convenience and sense of protection.

Credit cards appear at 20%, Revolut accounts at 19%, while Apple Pay and Google Pay digital platforms record 17%. Bank deposits follow with 6%, while 1% of participants answered I don’t know.

How do they prefer to pay

When consumers were asked to declare the preferred payment method, the results are slightly different: First PayPal comes with 34%, second debit card with 25%, and third delivery with 12%.

Because they choose a particular method

The reasons behind each choice clearly reveal how the Greek consumer thinks. Security is the most important factor, with 71% to be considered a primary reason for choice. Following are speed (56%) and convenience (49%), which show how decisive the use experience in the purchase process has become. The habit (15%) and the economy (14%) appear at lower rates, while 10%of users say they choose a payment method due to bonus points or reward programs. Only 2% prefer ways to allow them to pay later or in installments, while 1% say other than 1% do not know.

Research confirms that credibility remains the main issue. Debit cards are still dominant because of the familiarization of users and trust they inspire. At the same time, speed and convenience enhance the position of electronic wallets and services such as Paypal, Revolut and Apple/Google Pay. Consumers prioritize solutions that offer data security and seamless transactions, making payment options a critical part of the overall purchasing experience in e -commerce.
