Airfare prices skyrocket in 2022 and should continue to rise

by

The average price of air tickets in Brazil rose up to 62% from January to March this year, according to a survey by Kayak, a company specializing in travel search. The surge is related to the increase in fuel prices and the greater demand for travel after the easing of restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

Kayak recorded in this first quarter an increase of at least 500% in searches for the main domestic and international destinations.

The largest commercial aviation companies claim that ticket prices are dynamic and are mainly pressured by the rise in QAV (aviation kerosene), which follows the international price of oil. On the 1st, Petrobras announced an 18% increase in the QAV, which should further increase the ticket price.

Among the 20 most searched national routes, flights to Brasília were the ones that suffered the greatest adjustment (62%). Tickets to the federal capital cost an average of BRL 1,052, considering flights originating throughout the country until December 31, 2022.

Following the ranking of price increases for domestic flights are Florianópolis (51%), São Paulo (49%), Navegantes (49%) and Rio de Janeiro (47%). The capital of São Paulo is the most sought-after domestic destination and tickets now cost, on average, R$1,021.

The national ticket with the highest average price among the 20 main destinations is Maceió, R$ 1,587, which registered a 36% increase in relation to the beginning of the year.

Among the top 20 international destinations, Barcelona, Spain, was the flight with the highest readjustment (32%). A ticket to the Catalan city costs an average of R$4,541.

Rome was the destination that grew the most in searches, according to Kayak. Demand for flights to the Italian capital rose 1,326% in the first three months of the year.

The only flight on the list that was cheaper was to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina (-3%). Tourism in the city is closely linked to the ski resorts, which receive more visitors during the winter.

TICKET PRICE FOR EASTER HOLIDAYS AND TIRADENTS

In simulations carried out on Tuesday morning (5), the report found bitter prices for air tickets on national holidays in April: Good Friday (15) and Tiradentes (21).

The cheapest Latam trip between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo cost R$ 1,569, going on Friday and returning on Sunday of Holy Week.

To take advantage of the Tiradentes holiday, leaving São Paulo on Thursday (21) and returning from Recife on Sunday (24), the cheapest option offered by Gol was R$1,707.

The same long weekend, round trip, from Brasília to Belo Horizonte, did not cost less than R$1,830 for Azul.

AIRLINES COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE OF FUEL

In a note, Azul stated that prices vary according to some important factors, such as stretch, seasonality, advance purchase, seat availability, among others. “In addition, the company points out that the high dollar and fuel, something that has been happening systematically, are also elements that influence ticket prices.”

Latam stated that it “remains aware of the external vulnerability due to the war in Ukraine, which has a direct impact on the price of oil and, consequently, on the rise in the price of aviation kerosene (QAV) and on the company’s costs”.

He also said that the company needed to make some changes to flights scheduled for the coming months and postpone the launch of new routes. “This scenario also impacts on an increase in ticket prices and additional services in the order of 25% to 30%.”

Gol stated that “the current prices, the highest since 2008, impact the costs of operations of all airlines, which have precisely in the price of the QAV the variable that most interferes in the prices of air tickets.”
