New round of crossings for uninsured vehicles and unpaid road tax is coming in November. Immediately after, and specifically in December, the procedures for identifying vehicles that have not passed a Technical Inspection (MOT) begin. Notices have already been sent to more than 200,000 vehicle owners who are either uninsured or have not paid road tax and are being asked to comply.

In the event that they do not meet their obligations in November – when a new round of crossings will be carried out – they will be asked to pay exorbitant fines, in addition to the obligation they have to comply.

What applies to those who have not passed KTEO

Thus, with the passing of a reasonable period of time and the completion of cross-checks again, citizens and legal entities, who did not comply, will receive the notifications with the confirmed fines via SMS, email or post.
After the new round of intersections in November – which, as mentioned above, will concern unpaid fees and uninsured vehicles – the checks will also begin for those vehicles that have not passed through a KTEO.

The specific procedure aims to identify the vehicles that are currently driving on the roads without having passed a Technical Inspection and are considered to be “mobile bombs”: In fact, the figures so far show that of the approximately 8.5 million vehicles, almost 450,000 do not fall under the obligation to have a vehicle registration certificate, another 5 million appear in the relevant registers and therefore have passed the prescribed procedure, leaving a balance of almost 3 million.

In other words, about 1 out of 3 vehicles have not passed a technical inspection at KTEOs, which of course makes them dangerous for possible accidents.

Those interested can be informed about the results of the cross-checks concerning their vehicle, either via gov.gr in the category “Property and Taxation” and in the subcategory “Vehicles”or directly at oximata.gov.gr.
Access to the new application of the Ministry of Digital Governance is done with TaxisNet codes.

What are the fines depending on the violation?

Cross-checks are carried out by the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance of the Ministry of Digital Governance in collaboration with the Ministries of National Economy and Finance, Infrastructure and Transport and Citizen Protection and the Independent Public Revenue Authority (A.A.D.E.), under the coordination of the Presidency of the Government, while utilizing data from the Auxiliary Fund Car Accident Liability Insurance and the Alternative Vehicle Management of Greece (EDOE).

It is noted that, for the first time, a cross-check of vehicle data from all the registers of the competent bodies is carried out, which until now show significant discrepancies between them.

This possibility was achieved through data control, cleaning and homogenization procedures.

Those found to be illegal will receive electronic notification (“ravasaki”) with fines from 250 to 1,000 euros, which are doubled in case of non-compliance. At the same time, license plates and license plates will be removed.

But what are the fines per category and stage of infringement?

  • Uninsured vehicles: €1,000 for buses and trucks, €500 for passenger cars, €250 for two-wheelers.
  • Unpaid road tax: a fine equal to the annual tax, plus the amount due.
  • Non-performance of KTEO: €400
  • Reoffending: double fines and mandatory removal of plates and license.

Documents are returned only with proof of payment of fine and certificate of compliance (insurance, KTEO or road tax). If, after three months, the second electronic check shows non-compliance again, the plates will be removed compulsorily and without further notice.
