Meta, the parent company of Facebook, will charge creators a commission of about 47.5% on sales of digital assets and experiences made within the company’s virtual reality platform, Horizon Worlds.
The fee includes a 30% hardware platform-related fee for sales made through the Meta Quest Store, where sales of apps and games destined for its VR headsets are made, and an additional 17.5% related to the Horizon platform, said one. Meta spokesperson to Reuters this Wednesday (13).
On Monday, the tech giant said it will begin testing tools for digital item creators to sell products in the company’s metaverse and, in turn, make money from it.
Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has been critical of Apple’s 30% commission from app developers, but Meta’s strategy of charging digital creators nearly half the value of their sales on its own platform angered many of them.
Meta’s Horizon Worlds, an expansive social virtual reality platform, and Horizon Venues, focused on virtual events, are the first iterations of metaverse-like spaces.
