Panel SA: Flower price soars and worries florists on the eve of Mother’s Day

by

On the eve of Mother’s Day, the soaring price of flowers generates tension in the florist market.

For some types of red roses, the values even doubled, according to Tanus Saab, from Abaf, an association that represents florists in 14 states. He guides customers to prefer products that have less variation, such as orchids and white flowers.

Renato Opitz, director of Ibraflor (Brazilian Institute of Floriculture), attributes the problem to the pandemic, which led some producers to abandon the activity, reducing supply.

“Many of these producers, at the beginning [da pandemia], threw away 90% of their production and what they sold was at a ridiculously low price. They closed their doors or reduced production,” he says.

Now, with the increase in demand driven by the resumption of parties, weddings and fairs, the prices of so-called cut flowers – which are sold out of the vase, for bouquets and decorations – have soared.

On May 16, Abaf will meet with industry representatives to discuss measures that favor flower shops and contain high prices on upcoming commemorative dates, such as Valentine’s Day.
