Brazilian cachaça producers joined the Mexican tequileiro sector to publish a manifesto, this Wednesday (11), in defense of the alcohol content of the drinks, which are traditional in the countries.
The sector fears an escalation of Health bodies in the debate for reducing the alcohol content of distillates as a measure to curb harmful consumption of alcohol in countries.
According to Carlos Lima, executive director of Ibrac, the drinks have a geographical indication and, therefore, the alcohol content cannot be changed. “We are recognized products, protected in their countries, by characteristics, by tradition and by historical importance”, he says.
In his opinion, the discussion should consider the amount of drink consumed and not the alcohol content.
“We are afraid that this recommendation will have other consequences from the point of view of publicity, taxation, and that it will affect our sectors in another way”, says Lima.
Ibrac, which brings together companies in the sector responsible for more than 80% of the volume of the drink sold in Brazil, says that the country annually produces about 800 million liters of cachaça.
