The 1st Philosophy Festival comes to the gardens of the French School of Athens

by

The French Institute of Greece organizes the 1st Philosophy Festival on 27 and 28 May 2022in the gardens of the French School of Athens (Didotou 6) with free entrance.

This first event, held in collaboration with the French School of Athens, the National and Kapodistrian Universities of Athens, Philosophie magazine, LIFO and ampa.lifo.gr, aims to explore the “Transformations of love” with the assistance of French and Greek thinkers, academics, artists and representatives of the French and Greek media.

What is thunderous love? Does the word “love” have the same meaning for all sexes? Can we love many people at the same time? Where does desire end and where does power begin? Can we promise eternal faith? Can we love without domination? How do we become a couple today? Love and freedom, a paradoxical combination?

These are some of the questions that will be discussed at the festival and will seek their answers in the speakers’ discussions with the public, in the idyllic environment of the gardens of the French School.

«Love, a dominant element of our existence and of our most hidden hopes, a major theme of inspiration for world literature, cinema, television series and reality-shows, has been making a spectacular entry in the field of philosophy lately, also gaining an important place in our societies“, The organizers state in the press release and add:

«In contrast to Plato who included the feeling of love in his contemplation, the Western philosophical tradition chose to distance itself from it, judging it particularly incomprehensible, closely connected with the whims of the flesh and the inconsistencies of the soul, far removed from the unique and true love of God. However, the evolution of morals, the search for “happiness” and “knowledge”, the predominance of the humanities, the growing interest of psychoanalysis in the labyrinthine paths of desire, lead to the search for new approaches.

From God’s love to unholy love: countless variations of passion, desire and sexuality. Love, however, seems to oppose any attempt to define, conquer, maintain, characterize, by the logic that is now abolished (“the heart has its reasons…”) in its attempt to capture an object that escapes it while it multiplies. In societies where individualism and hedonism seem to have expanded their reach and at a time when the pandemic is accelerating the transition to digital encounters and practices, should we applaud this flourishing or reflect on impending frustration?».

The Philosophy Festival is a continuation of the events of the Night of Philosophy by the French Institute of Greece, which were widely accepted by the public, thus proving the common interest of Greeks and French for modern philosophical approaches. There will be simultaneous translation.
