Brit Awards: The male and female categories are abolished from next year

by

The British BRIT Music Awards will eliminate the male and female categories from next year, introducing gender-neutral awards for British and international artists, it was announced today by the organizers.

The performers will claim the Artist of the Year or International Artist of the Year award at the annual awards ceremony, which will take place on February 8, 2022.

“It is important that BRITs continue to evolve and aim to be as open as possible to everyone,” said Tom Marts, the new British Awards president and vice president of Polydor Records, in a statement.

“We feel it is the perfect time to celebrate the achievements of artists in the music they create and the work they do, regardless of gender.”

The BRIT Awards follow in the footsteps of other award-winning shows or events that have eliminated gender categorization.

In September, the San Sebastian Film Festival awarded Jessica Chastain and Flora Ophelia Hoffman Lindal the first neutral gender acting award for Best Actress.

The 42nd BRIT Music Awards will be presented, according to APE-MPE, by actor Mo Gilligan.

“The BRIT Awards are not just a celebration of British music, they are a reflection of British culture,” said Geoff Taylor, CEO of the BRIT Awards.
