In Canada directed by the Indigenous Dene team of the First Nations of Canada, Calvin Redvers he was not allowed on the red carpet at the 75th Cannes Film Festival because he wore traditional moccasins, he told Canadian media.

The director is a member of the Dene Native community and grew up in northwestern Canada.

«I grew up around my land culture and moccasins are a big dealHe told the CBC.

«I understand that there are some rules about dress code on the red carpet, so I thought that if I wore a tuxedo, a bow tie and a piece that showed that I was a native, I would be accepted.».

Redvers added that moccasins “are considered very ptraditional and formal shoesIn many cultures in Canada.

The director had traveled to France with a delegation of indigenous directors and had been invited to the premiere of “Les Amandiers” by French-Italian actress Valeria Bruni Tendeski on May 22nd.

Festival security, however, barred him from crossing the red carpet, Redvers told several Canadian media outlets. He was only allowed to return after changing his shoes.

«It’s a bit difficult to deal with such things. Even now when I think about it, it kind of upsets me. I was disappointed. I was angryHe explained when he returned to Vancouver in British Columbia.

The brown moccasins were made by Radvers’s sister and she said he was “excited” to wear them at an important time in his life.

“Every time I wear them, I have the best feeling, I’m connected to the Dene family and roots,” he explained.

Hours after the incident, the director said he met with top Festival executives, who apologized and invited him to put on his red carpet shoes during the screening of David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future.”

The director in a Facebook post expressed the hope that the incident will help spread the message “that the clothing of indigenous cultures is perfectly acceptable in formal settings such as the red carpet”.
