Basketball player LeBron James, 37, has officially become a billionaire. This Thursday (2), Forbes estimated that the Los Angeles Lakers star’s net worth is $1 billion.

According to Reuters, James is the first active NBA player to achieve the status. Former basketball player Michael Jordan, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $1.7 billion, achieved billionaire status 11 years after retirement.

Forbes estimated that James earned $121.2 million last year. Despite earning about $400 million in salary during his NBA career with the Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat, James’ off-court earnings far outweigh that.

Forbes estimated that James raised more than $900 million in commercial investments and endorsements. His investments and businesses include a partnership in Spring Hill Company – owner of three brands, Grupo Esportivo Fenway, a chain of pizzerias and a real estate portfolio of US$ 80 million (approximately R$ 383 million).

Raised by a single mother in Akron, Ohio, he has invested significant money back in his hometown, opening a school and planning housing and a community center to help families and children.

On the court, James has won four NBA championships, been named the league’s MVP four times, and has been selected to 18 All-Star teams. He also won two Olympic gold medals.
