The Oscar and Golden Palm Award-winning German director of the iconic film “The Tambourine”, Volker Schlendorf, will be in North Evia for the screening of his recent documentary “The Forester”. The documentary will be its closing film Evia Film Project, of the new initiative of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, which will take place from 15 to 19 June in Edipsos, Limni and Agia Anna.

The beloved director will present his film on Sunday, June 19, at 21:30, at the Apollo cinema in Edipsos, with free admission for the public. The Forester takes us to the Sahel, the steppe strip of land south of the Sahara Desert in Africa, and introduces us to a remarkable man whose life work was honored with the so-called Nobel Prize, the Right Livelihood Award in 2018. Tony Rinaudo found a way to grow trees in the most barren areas. The Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) method restores not only the soil, but also the dream of a better tomorrow.

THE “Leader of all Farmers”, as he is fondly called today in many villages in Africa, he had to fight a hard battle to get his ideas accepted. Having worked in the Sahel for 30 years, he saw despair and hunger, but also determination and change. The documentary conveys a strong message of community, self-empowerment and, above all, hope.

The Evia Film Project is part of the special development project “Photodotes” of the Ministry of Culture and Sports for the reconstruction and restoration of Evia after the catastrophic fires of the summer of 2021. The Evia Film Project is carried out with the support of the Region of Central Greece and Elliniko Cinema Center, in collaboration with the Municipality of Istiaia-Edipsos and the Municipality of Mantoudi-Lake-Agia Anna. The Thessaloniki Festival collaborates with the production organizations based in Evia, the Department of Digital Arts and Cinema of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Psachna and the Greek Documentary Festival of Chalkida.
