Once again Anitta made clear her position against President Jair Bolsonaro. Invited to speak about her new album “Versions of Me” on the most watched talk show on French TV, Quotidien, from TMC-TF1, on Friday night (24), she did not mention the politician’s name and made point of emphasizing that he “does not represent Brazilians”.
“How is Bolsonaro?” asked the show’s host, Yann Barthès, in Portuguese. First, Anitta said that she did not pronounce Bolsonaro’s name. She said she even called him Voldemort [Lord Voldemort é considerado o mais poderoso bruxo das trevas de todos os tempos na saga Harry Potter], “he who shall not be named”. But then she opened the game.
“I like to pass on my political thinking to the public as well. And I don’t agree with much that this president does: I think he encourages racism, prejudice and everything bad”, he said to the astonishment of the guests at the attraction’s bench.
“Prejudice is unacceptable, in my view,” continued the singer, who then recalled that Bolsonaro had an “issue with French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron. In 2019, the Brazilian president endorsed a comment by a netizen on Facebook, which mocked Macron’s wife, 24 years older than the French politician, and was criticized on social media. The French press also echoed the comment, calling the Brazilian a sexist.
Yann Barthès said that “he was not very elegant” and Anitta wasted no time: “He does not represent Brazilians at all, we are super respectful”. The singer tried to change the subject and started talking about her songs and clips, considered “daring” by the French and she explained:
“We Brazilians are free. I like to convey the message that we can do whatever we want: man, woman… There is a culture where men can do everything; when women do the same things as men , they are judged. So, I like to break this taboo”, replied Anitta.
The singer also revealed that she started studying French during confinement. Even mixing it with phrases in Portuguese, she had her French praised at the end of her participation and was invited to return to Paris and to the program.
