‘Mysterious’ holes on a Florida beach: The unlikely explanation for their creation

Local officials in southwest Florida said the deep holes found on beaches in the area are believed to be the result of visitors trying to take part in a TikTok challenge.

THE Alison Ward from the city of Sanibel said he found four holes, up to 1.5m deep and 1.2m wide, on beaches.

“I almost fell into one,” Ward told WBBH-TV. “I’ve seen dents, but I’ve never seen holes like these.”

Sanibel Mayor Holly Smith said Department of Public Works officials are working to plug the holes.

“When we looked at the depth and size of some we found on the beach, we found they weren’t from a sandcastle,” Smith said.

The mayor said a viral challenge is believed to be behind the unusual holes.

“There were some TikTok challenges that were like, ‘How deep can you dig?'” he explained.

The Marco Island Police Department posted a photo on Facebook last week showing a large hole on a beach with a shovel abandoned inside.

Police authorities have asked anyone who digs holes on the beach to make sure to close them before leaving.

“Please refill the hole and take your things with you. It is a danger to those who frequent the beach, especially to our beautiful sea turtles,” a statement said.
