It’s his year. Tom Cruise turned 60 with record box office and rave reviews for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. He was just 23 years old when he first played Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in 1986’s ‘Top Gun’.

He was in the audience for Adele’s concert on stage at the BST Hyde Park Festival and also attended the British Grand Prix to support Lewis Hamilton, who Cruise described as a “great friend”, according to ET.

And he especially loves speed, machines and his ability to pilot airplanes or fighter jets is known.

Sometimes I run and sometimes I get stopped. But I’m also quite often on racetracksTom Cruise admits in an exclusive interview for PEOPLE’s Top Gun special.

Although there were Navy pilots on the set of the film to stand in for him in the dangerous scenes he himself disagreed. He got his pilot’s license after the first “Top Gun” movie. “I have flown with the birds by my side. We fly together. It’s beautiful. There is a power and a majesty to it. I look at nature, sunsets, sunrises and stars up there.” He continues: “I was the kid who when I was very young would sneak out the window and climb up on the roof to look at the stars, so to be on a plane and look at the stars… it’s just amazing. It’s amazing to me,” Cruz says.
