Athens International Airport became the leading airport in the category of airports with 25-40 million passengers for 2021, within the framework of the Best Airport Awards of the International Airports Council-ACI Europe.

Athens Airport was awarded for its overall operation during the pandemic period, but also for the implementation of innovative digital services for the passenger public and its constant commitment to its environmental goals.

Every year, the institution awards the European airports that stand out for the most excellent performance and initiatives.

This year’s assessment focused on innovation and digitization of passenger services and airport sustainability targets.

In particular, the jury, made up of personalities representing the European aviation industry, which this year included EASA Director-General Patrick Ky, Eurocontrol Director-General Eamonn Brennan and the Director-General of the European Directorate-General for Transport Commissioner Henrik Hololei particularly acknowledged the way in which Athens Airport, under unprecedented conditions due to the pandemic, utilized modern technology and Artificial Intelligence to provide innovative services to the passenger public, based on the basic principle of Greek hospitality. .

The jury also praised the continued commitment of Athens International Airport to reducing its carbon footprint, maintaining a neutral carbon balance (Level 3+) despite the ongoing crisis. In addition, the commitment of Athens International Airport to achieve the goal of zero CO2 emissions by 2025 and the goals of sustainable development of the United Nations, as well as the effort to increase the use of renewable energy were evaluated extremely positively.

The award ceremony of Athens Airport took place in Geneva, in the context of the annual Conference and the General Assembly of ACI Europe, which was the first to take place with a physical presence after 2019.

The award also sealed the effort that the AIA is constantly making, helping to address the global challenge of the pandemic.

It is noteworthy that, in this context, since the beginning of June 2020, Athens International Airport has responded to the call of EASA, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, acting as a pilot airport for the implementation and evaluation of new health and safety measures and procedures, with a view to shaping European best practices and a framework that allows travelers to gradually connect with interconnectedness and confidence in air travel.
