The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, designed by the Kefalonian architect Patroklos Karantinos, in the form of a temple pavilion, housed until 2014, the permanent exhibitions, the conservation workshops, the administration offices, etc.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports is proceeding with the reconstruction of the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, which remains closed, after the severe damage suffered by the strong earthquake of 2014. The preliminary study for the reconstruction and re-operation of the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli concerns the structural and geometric “redesign” of of an existing building and its replacement with a new one, in the form it has today, maintaining its volume and aesthetics and was unanimously approved by the Council of Museums of the YPPOA.

As stated by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni: “Argostoli, with a large number of visitors annually from all over the world, remains without an Archaeological Museum since 2014, due to the great damage caused to the building by the strong earthquake that hit the island at the time. It is really sad, an island with such an important cultural heritage, all these years remains without a museum. After the completion of the procedures for the modification of the layout, the Ministry of Culture and Sports proceeds with the reconstruction of the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, according to modern requirements and specifications».

The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, designed by the Kefalonian architect Patroklos Karantinos, in the form of a temple pavilion, housed until 2014, the permanent exhibitions, the conservation laboratories, the administrative offices, the sanitary areas and the storage areas for the archaeological finds.

Taking into account its state of conservation, the current regulatory framework for museum buildings and the need to adapt it to the modern requirements of a museum, during the approval of the architectural program it was decided that the building needs a structural, technological and functional upgrade, through the removal and reconstruction of in the same form.

The redesign of the architectural preliminary study follows the morphological elements of the existing building. Study-wise, the main volume of the differences in relation to the existing building, concerns its interior. The purpose of the architectural preliminary study of the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli is to increase the useful surface to meet the needs of a more demanding architectural program, to harmonize the building with the current legislation and to upgrade it functionally.
