A month separates us from its premiere House of the Dragon, the series that puts us back in Westeros hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones. But the scene is similar. Some think of the throne and the king must choose his or her successor.
And unlike the original series, here everyone has dragons and we see them in all their glory.
House of the Dragon is based on George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood released in 2018, and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It is the story of House Targaryen and the civil war that marked the era.

Here are the cast and role details:
Paddy Considine plays King Viserys Targaryen. o Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed Jaehaerys Targaryen on the great council of Harrenhal. A warm, kind and dignified man, Viserys strives to carry on his grandfather’s legacy. As we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good people don’t necessarily make good kings.
Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon (The Sea Snake). The lord of the House of Velaryon who comes from Valyria and has a history similar to that of the Targaryens. The “sea serpent” is the most famous sailor of all time and built his House with wealth greater than that of the Lannisters, and has the greatest naval power.
Eve Best plays Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. Dragon rider and wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon the “woman who was never crowned queen”, was bypassed in the line of succession by the great council that chose her cousin Viserys for the throne simply because he was male.
Rhys Ifans plays Otto Hightower, the hand of the King who serves him loyally and sees the King’s brother Daemon as a greater threat to peace.
Sonoya Mizuno plays Mysaria. She arrived in Westeros poor, was sold more times than she can remember, and while she could have given up, she ended up being the most trusted ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, who is heir to the throne.
Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower: She is the daughter of Otto Hightower (hand of the King) and one of the most beautiful women in the seven kingdoms. Raised in the Red Keep by the king and his inner circle, she is both a gentle presence with a sharp political mind.
Emma D’Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The king’s first child. She hails from Valyria and has her own dragon. Many would say he was born with everything, but he was not born a man.
Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen. The king’s little brother and heir to the throne, he is a fearless warrior with his own dragon. But they say that every time a Targaryen is born the gods flip a coin.
Fabien Frankel plays Ser Criston Cole. Originally from Dorne, Ser Christon is the son of the Lord Warden of Blackhaven. He has no claims to land or titles. All he has is his honor and terrible swordsmanship.
Through Martin’s Fire and Blood we learn that it was during Viserys’ tenure that the first… seeds were planted for the civil war that came much later and is known as the dance of dragons. Protagonists in this battle were his children. Aegon Targaryen the second to succeed him and Rhaenyra Targaryen.
