It seems that the legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has gained a new chapter. This Friday (22), the actor filed an appeal in the defamation lawsuit filed by his ex-wife. The new request came the day after the actress requested the final decision in the multimillion-dollar lawsuit that convicted her of defamation against the Hollywood star.
“Plaintiff and Defendant John C. Depp II, through their attorney, appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals for all adverse decisions and final judgment order of this Circuit Court issued June 24, 2022,” they read. the documents delivered to the court of Fairfax, in the state of Virginia, United States.
After six weeks of trial, Depp was ordered to pay $2 million to his ex-wife for defamatory statements. The actress also ended up being punished and will have to compensate him in $ 10 million. But Amber’s defense asked for the trial to be overturned.
“We believe the court made mistakes that prevented a fair and consistent First Amendment verdict,” a spokesperson for Heard said in a statement on the appeal. “Therefore, we are appealing the sentence. Although we realize that today’s request will light the fires of Twitter, there are measures we need to take to ensure justice and equity”, concluded the lawyer without explaining the grounds of the appeal.
“The jury heard the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and reached a clear and unanimous verdict that the defendant herself defamed Depp, in multiple instances. We remain confident in our case, this verdict will stand,” Depp’s defense said. in a note sent to the American website Deadline.
Last month, Heard participated in an interview also on Deadline and showed medical documents that “represented years of real-time explanations of what was going on,” she said. The documents have reports since 2011, when the two met. The actress and Depp made their relationship official in 2012 and got married three years later. They divorced in 2016.
“There is a journal of years of notes going back to 2011, from the beginning of my relationship, taken by my doctor, to whom I was reporting the abuse,” the actress explained.
