The title of “sincere hater” who shared controversial videos, such as the one in which he soaked in a tub of Nutella, a classic of bad taste, is in the past. Entrepreneur and content producer from Rio de Janeiro, Luccas Neto, 30, changed his career focus and, due to the success he achieved with children, has been compared to Xuxa Meneghel in his heyday.
It is the largest YouTube channel for children’s content, with 37.7 million subscribers. Neto is also in charge of a virtual store with a variety of products that explore his image – books, clothes, dolls -, and has already released 16 films on streaming platforms (the most recent of which, “A Gincana do Netoland”).
“When they compare me with Xuxa’s trajectory, of course I’m happy”, he says. “It marked several generations on TV in Brazil and around the world. I’m in another direction, through the creation of digital content through multiplatforms. I think this is an interesting challenge and I love being able to bring this audience together with the internet.”
The turning point in Neto’s career did not happen overnight. He realized over time that the audience that consumed his work was mostly children. The content producer says that he decided to adjust all the content on the channel and hired a multidisciplinary team of psychopedagogues to help adapt what he produces. The eschatological jokes and the appealing jokes are gone, a playful and educational content has entered.
Concern about what children consume only increased two years ago when he became the father of Luke, from his relationship with actress Jessica Diehl, 24. Neto says that fatherhood brought a more intense look at his work and inspired him to create the Luccas Toon Kids channel on YouTube –with 163 thousand subscribers– aimed at early childhood audiences and serving as support for parents.
This year, he intends to fulfill his dream of debuting his first film in cinema, in partnership with Warner Bros., and start dubbed the content of his channel into English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese from Portugal – the latter after the controversy article in the Lusitanian newspaper that pointed out that Portuguese children would be speaking only “Brazilian” due to Neto’s productions, a phenomenon also among the “kids” of the hometown. “On this issue, I tried to absorb everything with great respect and attention and I am always very attentive to dialogue”, he says, diplomatically.
