A new book sheds light on the late French couturier’s early forays into the world of fashion, Pierre Cardinwhich saw him rocket to the top in 1964 with his revolutionary collection Cosmocorps of the Space Age.

The writer Jean-Pascal Eslongtime communicator for the fashion designer, unearths a treasure trove of rare documents and photographs in the volume entitled “Pierre Cardin: Mode Mythe Modernité” (Pierre Cardin: Fashion, Myth, Modernity) expected to be published in French by Flammarion on September 21.

The book includes a foreword by Jean Paul Gaultier (Jean Paul Gaultier), who started his career at Studio Cardin, and the cover photo of model Celia Hammond in a pink cloud hat and pink coat mirrored is a 1962 image by British photographer Norman Parkinson.

THE Pierre Pellegri, another close associate of Pierre Cardin who runs Maxim’s restaurant, took images from Japanese photographer Yoshi Takata, who met the French couturier in 1954 and invited him to teach a class at the Bunka Fashion School in Tokyo in 1957. Thus the first step in a long period of artistic and commercial collaboration between Cardin and Takata. Thanks to Takata, Pierre Cardin met his muse Hiroko Matsumoto, the first model from Japan in the world of French haute couture.

Pierre Cardin’s creations were worn by style icons such as Jackie Kennedy, Lorraine Bacall and Jeanne Moreau. Along with Paco Rabanne and André Courrèges, he introduced futuristic creations using materials such as PVC that continue to influence designers today. Carden continued to build a global empire until his death in 2020 at the age of 98.
