The Spanish Public Ministry has asked for more than eight years in prison for Colombian singer Shakira, 45, and compensation of more than 23 million euros (about R$121 million), for a case of tax fraud involving 14.5 million euros. euros, equivalent to R$ 75 million.
According to the newspaper El PaÃs, Shakira’s representatives have not yet commented on the court decision, which took place this Friday (29). Last Wednesday (27), the artist had already refused an agreement with the Public Ministry, opting to go to trial for tax evasion.
The Prosecutor’s Office attributes to the artist a tax fraud of 14.5 million euros, between the years 2012 and 2014, when she allegedly pretended not to reside in Spain. In her statement, Shakira, recently separated from Spanish player Piqué, says the case “constitutes a total affront” to her rights.
The singer also states that she has always shown “impeccable conduct, as a person and contributor, and total willingness to resolve any differences”. She also criticized the IRS, which, in her own words, “spends millions” on “chases” like the one she suffered, and “loses one in two lawsuits with its taxpayers.”
That’s why, justify her lawyers, the artist decided to “leave the matter in the hands of the law, with the calm and the confidence that justice will prove her right”. According to AFP, the formal referral to the court has not yet been announced, nor has a trial date been set.
