The long history of the city and the role it has played for many years in the wider region – it is located about 20 km NE of the city of Kilkis – is highlighted in the short film.
Built in a privileged position, on top of a hill overlooking all points of the horizon, near the Gallic River and its tributaries, the settlement in Palatiano it was founded in the 10th century BC, while its flourishing residential phases date back to the Hellenistic (4th-2nd century BC) and Roman times (1st-3rd century AD). The remains of the late Roman phase of the city are still visible today and the visitor can walk along its authentic cobbled ancient streets and paths.

A Roman city in the Krussia mountains of Kilkis”, by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
The city develops during the classical era and acquires characteristics of an urban center from the 4th century to the middle of the 1st BC. century. Its heyday, however, is documented during the Roman period, from the 1st century. until the 3rd AD century, when it was destroyed by an unknown cause.
Among the most important monuments, which testify to the wealth of the city, is the honorary Hero, which dates back to the end of the 1st and beginning of the 2nd century. A.D. In it, four of the five statues of the important family of Patras and Ammias were saved in very good condition. The names of their three sons – Alexander, Medes and Zoilos – are also preserved.
The archaeological site of Palatianou may – according to scholars – be identified with the ancient city of Ioron, something that remains to be verified with future excavations and the finding of an inscription.
The Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis is planning the immediate creation of an Information Center using digital technology in the context of the project “Europe-Palatian-Stovoi: cultural values ​​of the past and the future”, included in the cross-border program INTERREG 2014-2020.
The general coordination and overall editing of the film is the head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis, Dr. Georgia Stratouli, the scientific editing is done by the archaeologists Dr. Nektarios Poulakakis and Dr. Maria Farmaki, while our “guide” to the site is the archaeologist Dr. Theodoros Papakostas. The direction was supervised by Thanos Kartsoglou.
It is very likely, according to Ms. Stratouli, that the film will participate in an international competition, as the previous film of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kilkis “The city of Morrylia” won the first prize of the public vote in 2021, among 32 films from all over the world the world, in the “Museums in Short” international competition, while in the same competition in 2020, the second prize in the public voting category was won by EFA Kilkis’ first film “Seleucus A’ Nicator. From Europe to the Hellenistic World”.
