The term “craft” refers to processes, actions, techniques and forms of creativity usually performed by hand or using hand-held devices.

The social dimensions of handicraft are explored by the “HANDMADE” exhibition which opens tomorrow, Thursday, August 4, at Art Space Pythagorion, in the port of Pythagorion, Samos and will last until September 25. It is a co-production of the German Schwarz Foundation in collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) at the Art Space Pythagorion in Samos, curated by Katerina Gregou, artistic director of the EMST.

The term “craft” refers to processes, actions, techniques and forms of creativity usually performed by hand or using hand-held devices. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the pressure for productivity and efficiency but also with low-cost mass production, handicrafts were gradually marginalized and in some cases completely disappeared. Traditional techniques and know-how that existed for generations were eliminated.

However, in recent years there has been a return to the roots of culture in the field of contemporary art. The exhibition explores the relationship between materiality and tradition and focuses on works that have an underlying social and political dimension. It aims to examine the networks of relationships that lie at the core of craft practices and traditions and in many cases become integral to collective empowerment. The artists Nikos Alexiou, Maria Varela, Bertille Bak, Silvina Der Meguerditchian, Maria Louizou, Jennifer Nelson, Eleni Mylona, Natalia Manda, Sphinxes participate in the exhibition.

In addition, it is accompanied by the educational program “HANDMADE / Tell a story” designed, edited and implemented by the visual artist and curator of educational programs for contemporary art, Katerina Zacharopoulou, which will last from September to October for students, teachers and organized groups of Samos.

However, as part of the collaboration between the Schwarz Foundation and EMST, which is being implemented in Samos, the documentary “Smyrni, the destruction of a cosmopolitan city, 1900-1922” by Maria Helios will also be shown on Saturday, August 6, at 9pm, at Cine Rex .

Honoring the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Disaster but at the same time the science of History, this important film which was first presented at the Benaki Museum in 2012, bringing to light unknown archival photographic and film material discovered in America and Europe, is shown as a parallel action of the exhibition, approaching history away from extreme nationalist narratives but also newer attempts at recording, which silence the tragic events of the Catastrophe, distorting the truth.

Finally, from August 7 to 13, at the Ancient Theater of Pythagoras in Samos, the Samos Young Artists Festival will take place, consistent with its audience for 12 years. This year, twenty-two young Greek and foreign up-and-coming musicians and established artists, travel from all over the world and meet in Samos, where they present a weekly program of live music ranging from the baroque repertoire to classical and romantic music, chamber music, fado music and bossa nova. Masha Ilyashov and Alexis Karaiskakis – Nastos maintain the artistic direction of the festival and curate a program of seven concerts in the ancient theater of Pythagoras, overlooking the sea and the coasts of neighboring Turkey.

The “Festival of Young Artists” of Samos is organized both for the residents of the island and for its visitors. To date, more than 170 internationally renowned musicians have been present, thus consolidating Samos and the festival as a music destination. The ticket price is kept low, 5 euros per concert, in order to give the opportunity to as wide an audience as possible to participate in the events, while all the proceeds are allocated to the Pythagorean cultural club.
