On Friday, August 5, the official event of the Municipality of Zagori for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, which was not held last year due to the coronavirus, was special, with the theme “Zagori, Epirus and the Revolution of 1821”, with the parallel presentation of the book by dr. Angelikis Angelis with the title “Out of Zagorio – In Zagorio. The contribution of Zagorisians to the Revolution of 1821: Scholars, Merchants, Friends”. At the event, the professor emeritus of the University of Ioannina and former rector Georgios Kapsalis, the assistant professor of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina Stefanos Tsiodoulos, as well as the author herself spoke. The governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, the mayor of Zagori, George Soukovelos and the president of the Panhellenic Federation of Sarakatsana Associations, George Moutsianas, greeted.
THE Mr. Kapsalis referred to the social and political physiognomy of Zagori in the pre-revolutionary period and emphasized the contribution of the Sarakatsanas to the Revolution of 1821 with Katsantonis as a reference person. Mr. Tsiodoulos focused on the introduction to Zagori of the progressive ideas of the West through merchants and on the imprinting of motifs, such as the Charter of Riga, on the murals of the Zagori mansions. Finally, Mrs. Angeli presented the eight axes of her book, spoke in detail about the “forgotten” personality of the friend, politician and collaborator of Kapodistrias, Konstantinos Rados, as well as about the establishment of the Revolutionary Organization in Epirus based in Tsepelovo under the guidance of Ioannis Vilaras and Athanasios Psalidas.
As the Doctor of Philosophy told the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, Angeliki Angeli“the privileges that existed in the region of Zagori since the 15th century, combined with the migration of many families to the non-Greece commercial centers of the time, contributed decisively to the economic and spiritual progress of the people of Zagori. As a result, the people of Zagoris financed the Filiki Etairia with the prominent contribution and participation of Manthos Rizaris, while they highlighted great scholars and personalities who were involved in the Philhellenic movement».
The two days of events in Zagori continued yesterday, Saturday August 6, with the annual event Anatome of the Sarakatsanaeans in the area of ​​Gyftokampos.
