In the winter of 1963, the debris from the Stoichio slope landslide fell into the Stefaniotis River, creating a basin which was slowly flooded with water
It is located in the heart of the Argitheatic landscape, next to the village of Stefaniada and is considered the youngest natural lake in Greece.
So its current appearance may be calm and its green waters reflect the large mountain masses of Eastern Argythea, but 59 years ago, the inhabitants of two settlements stayed awake and were forced to leave their homes, left to the fury of nature and the terrible events that happened that winter of 1963.
It was January 30, when the debris of the Stoichio slope landslide, which at an altitude of 850 meters literally detached itself from the Sminiko mountain, fell into the Stefaniotis river, creating a basin which was slowly flooded with water. The inhabitants of the settlements, fortunately without casualties, were forced to rebuild their houses a little further from the lake.
Lake Stefaniada takes its name from the village and the river that is located near it and is now one of the most beautiful sights of the Karditsa prefecture, but also an oasis of coolness for all those who use it in the summer months for activities such as kayaking and cool dives on its small bank.
Its surface touches the 175 acres and there are many who characterize it as artificial, mainly because of its young age, but its reality is that it is a very natural lake, which, summer or winter, spring or autumn, captivates the eye with its beauty, while the wonderful Its turquoise waters are so peaceful that they immediately convey to you that absolute tranquility that is so rare these days.
