“They are objects related to either a historical event or a famous person,” explains Arlan Ettinger, founder and chairman of the Guernsey auction house.
Iconic items associated with popular artists and athletes will go up for auction next month in New York. Highlights include blues legend BB King’s first guitar and rare photos of movie star Marilyn Monroe.
“They are objects related to either a historical event or a famous person,” explains Arlan Ettinger, founder and chairman of the Guernsey auction house.
BB King’s first guitar, which is seeing the light of day for the first time, has a special place in the auction. Other items also come from the estate of King, who died in 2015, including handwritten compositions, an African traditional drum gifted to him by former South African president Nelson Mandela and jackets the famous guitarist wore on stage.
The hammer will also feature photos of Marilyn Monroe accompanied by an interesting story. “In 1945, US Army Captain Ronald Reagan asked a soldier to go and photograph attractive ‘Rosie the Riveter’ type girls working at a nearby military factory… This is one of the original photographs. This woman … became the great and legendary Marilyn Monroe,” Ettinger recounts, showing off one of the photos.
The auction also includes jazz singer Billie Holiday’s passport and fur, as well as sports gear from baseball star Mickey Mantle.
Among the items that stand out for their historical value is the telegraph of the fifth ship of the US Navy, the cruiser USS St. Louis, and a sword from the funeral of assassinated US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Proceeds from the sale of tools used in the ruins of the twin towers of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks in New York will go to the online museum dedicated to September 11, 2001.
The auction will take place online via LiveAuctioneers.com and invaluable.com on September 21st.
