Singer Anitta, 29, made a sequence of videos in her Stories talking to fans after becoming the first Brazilian to have won the Video Music Awards, the VMAs. The artist won in the category of best Latin music video on Sunday night (28).

“Hi guys, I know I promised my fans that I would come here and say something. I haven’t slept since yesterday because I’m still trying to process everything that happened last night. I’m heading home and just wanted to say thank you, do with let everyone know how happy I am,” she began.

“For non-Brazilians: It’s very difficult to understand what happened yesterday. My country has always had crazy social moments, especially from the place I came from. A lot of people don’t know, but I was born and raised in favelas, communities. For all of us , things are very impossible”, said the artist, who got emotional when talking about Honório Gurgel, the place where she grew up.

“To see a dream I’ve always dreamed of come true… I was raised with funk, and when I started people were getting arrested for singing that beat. And I promised that one day I would change that, and today I may have this”, continued the singer, who was leaving the message speaking English.

The artist went on to say that, despite singing songs in Spanish, the culture of Brazil is quite different from other Latin American countries. “We speak Portuguese, it’s a totally different world. I’m the first person to do this in my country. Now, after celebrating with my friends, I feel very grateful.”

“People looked at me and did not imagine that I came from a place like this. We grew up believing that there is no future for us, my dream has always been to show that it is possible”, he said. “Today was a special day for the whole country, now I’m watching videos from all over Brazil getting together like it’s a World Cup, cheering for me. I just want to thank everyone, my true friends, my family and my country whole.”

Anitta competed with Bad Bunny, with “Titi me Pregunto”, Becky GX Carol G, of “MAMIII”, Daddy Yankee, with “Remix”, Farruko, of the success “Pepas” and J Balvin & Skrillex, of “In da Ghetto” . It was the first time that Brazil won an award at the ceremony organized by MTV, which lists the best clips of the year.
