On Friday, September 2 at 19:30, the French La Femme meet two excellent bands of the domestic scene, The Steams and Dury Dava, in a night of gassed guitars and code “psychedelia”
September is, for many, the best month of the year in Athens. Back to the city with summer stories, a full agenda with many events and a big concert party that is always useful to seal this mood. Few groups can fulfill this mission like the French La Femmewho on Friday September 2 at 7:30 p.mat the last Parklife of the season at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), meet two outstanding bands of the domestic scene, the The Steams and Dury Davain a night of gassy guitars and code “psychedelia”.
The concert is held with free admission thanks to his donation Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
La Femme
In the long list of bands that have developed a special relationship with the Athenian audience over time, La Femme is probably the latest addition with the rousing live performances they have given since 2016. Based in Paris, but originally from Biarritz in the Pyrenees, the French collective was formed in the ΄10s around the pivotal figures of Sacha Got (guitar) and Marlon Magnée (keyboards). Alongside them were the backbone of the band, Sam Lefèvre and Noé Delmas on bass and drums respectively, and a number of different female voices: Alma Jodorowsky (granddaughter of the great director Alejandro Jodorowsky), Clara Luciani (in 2020 her interpretation of the classic “Summer Wine” with Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand), Clémence Quélennec, Grâce Hartzel and Jane Peynot.
With these materials, the proposal was made in the 10’s that was the next chapter of the French pop tradition, renewing it with disparate elements: it is the kosmische sound of the 70’s next to the hip hop of the 90’s, the carelessness of surf rock and the psych escape, disco hedonism and electro touches. Each element is added to each of their three albums so far, composing a “sonic dada collage”, as it has been characteristically written in the international music press. They rocked the waters with their debut Psycho Tropical Berlin (2013), turned even more psychedelic and danceable with Mystère (2016) and delivered their boldest album yet with Paradigmes (2021) which goes all the way from spaghetti western Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack to Giorgio Moroder’s motorik productions.
Although La Femme’s music is hard to put into words, it is as fully experienced in their sweeping concerts. “The catwalk meets Caligula” is one of the slick descriptions they’ve inspired about their stage presence aesthetic.
The Steams
With roots in the American acid rock that reached its peak in the late 60’s, but also the more mature and mystical influences of the classic psychedelic music of the early 70’s (Jefferson Airplane, The Doors), the four-member musical group The Steams is today a leader in the Athenian neo -psyche scene. In 2018 they released their first album Wild Ferment, while in June 2022 their second album entitled Mild Conquest was released. They have appeared alongside The Cure, Michael Kiwanuka, Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), Lumerians, Naxatras and others.
Dury Dava
The sound of the promising five-member group Dury Dava (davantouri if read backwards) is a bold Greek-language fusion of psychedelic rock, kraut obsessions and oriental elements. In April 2022, they released their second album, Deluxe.
